Lot 758
1793 S-3 R3- Chain AMERICA PCGS graded VF30. Attractive glossy chocolate and olive brown. The surfaces are mostly smooth but a strong glass reveals extremely fine roughness covering the fields and protected areas. No verdigris, and the only marks are a scuff of faint hairlines in the field before the neck and a shallow depression in the planchet near the rim right of the bust. The date and legends are bold. Evenly struck EDS, Breen state I, without any die clashmarks. A very nice mid-grade example of our popular "Chain Cent." Our grade is VF25. Comes in a slab with an old Green PCGS label.
Estimated Value $25,000-UP.

1793 S-3 R3- Chain AMERICA PCGS graded VG8. Sharpness F15 or slightly better but lightly corroded under a rather glossy reddish steel brown and chocolate patina. No verdigris, but there are some contact marks. These include a rim dent over the I in LIBERTY, a dull rim nick over that Y, a few old hairline scratches around the date, plus other minor marks scattered over both sides. The date is strong and the legends are complete. Nice detail and decent eye appeal for the grade in spite of the imperfect surfaces. EDS, Breen state I, before any die clashmarks. Our net grade is consistent with the slab grade.
Estimated Value $6,000-UP.

1793 S-9 R2 Wreath Cent NGC graded MS62 Brown. Choice glossy chocolate brown with frosty lighter steel brown toning covering the protected areas. The obverse fields are hard and slightly reflective while the fields on the reverse are covered with satiny mint luster. This cent offers outstanding eye appeal for the grade. The only marks are a faint microscopic hairline scratch across the bottom of the neck and a small planchet void (as struck) well left of the L in LIBERTY. Sharply struck E-MDS, Breen state II, with a fine die crack at CA to the stem and ribbon. The obverse is slightly misaligned to K-10 while the reverse is properly centered on the planchet. Called AU55 choice and tied for CC#8 honors in the Noyes census, his photo #20095. Our grade is AU58 choice, very close to mint state. And this beautiful Wreath Cent comes with a provenance that includes several prominent numismatists. Pop 1; The finest graded at NGC.

No verdigris and the only marks are a dull rim nick under the 7 in the date and a dull nick on the leaf above the O in ONE. The date and legends are complete and clear. 1793 S-11a R4+ Vine & Bars Edge Basal State-1. Glossy steel brown and chocolate. Smooth and attractive for the grade, just heavily worn. The obverse is Fair-2 but the reverse is slick. There is a deep dig on the portrait and a couple smaller contact marks on the reverse. Portions of the date can be made out with some effort while the portrait and leaves above the date are much easier to see. Fortunately there is enough detail to positively attribute this as S-11, and most of the Vine & Bars edge device is clear.

The obverse is sharper than the reverse and would grade VG10 by itself, but the reverse is very weak at the upper left thanks in part to the off-center strike. 1794 S-38 R5 VF25. Sharpness EF40 but cleaned and retoned frosty dark steel and reddish chocolate brown with lighter steel brown and tan toning in protected areas. There are some light contact marks on both sides including a vertical nick on the left top of the N in CENT, a couple diagonal nicks left of the O in OF, and a dull rim nick over the first A in AMERICA. The surfaces are decent but not perfectly smooth. A strong glass reveals uniform microscopic granularity covering both sides. No verdigris. Breen die state I. The inner chip in the field under the cap is strong but the one closer to the dentils is faint. Breen thought that the two chips got stronger as the die worn down, but this cataloger believes the chip got weaker as time went by. So, Breen says this piece is from the early state of the dies while I believe it is from the late state. Regardless, this is a sharp condition census example of a tough variety. Bland says net VF25 and tied for CC#4 in his census. Noyes says EF40 net VF25 and CC#4 by itself, his photo #28743. And it comes with a long provenance that includes several distinguished numismatists.

1794 S-44 R1 NGC graded AU55. Choice glossy light chocolate brown with satiny mint frost showing in some of the protected areas, especially on the reverse. Beautiful, smooth surfaces throughout, void of any hint of roughness or verdigris. Only trivial contact marks from flawless. The best identifying mark is a barely visible planchet clip that weakens the dentils over the T in LIBERTY and the opposing dentils over the second A in AMERICA. Nicely struck M-LDS, Breen state IV, showing a clear die crack from the dentils left of OF down through the N in ONE. A premium example in every respect. 1795 S-79 R7 Reeded Edge PCGS graded Genuine. Sharpness VG7 or slightly better but lightly corroded. The roughness is fairly uniform but does not extend to the highpoints, which are smooth. There are traces of shallow verdigris on both sides, but the verdigris is barely visible with a glass and does not detract from the eye appeal. There are a few contact marks hidden in the patina. These include a pair of parallel nicks or short scratches at the bottom of the cap into the hair and a few minor disturbances around the rims, the notable one a small rim bruise under the 9 in the date. The date and design elements remain visible in spite of the imperfect surfaces. The date is clear and easily readable and the legends are complete, although some letters on the reverse are weakened by the roughness. The color is a rather glossy dark olive and chocolate brown with lighter chocolate and steel brown toning on the highpoints. The contrast in toning helps accent the date and major design details, and this adds to the eye appeal. The all-important edge reeding is clearly visible, especially before the face where the reeds are relatively strong. The purpose for the reeding is speculative. Walter Breen suggested the reeding was "an experiment which proved to be a needless frill, adding to the cost of manufacture without compensatory advantage." Nicely expressed. Other experts have offered similar opinions while some have taken it a step farther proposing that the reeding was added to help identify cents struck under the new 168-grain standard that was adopted at the end of 1795 (versus the previous 208-grain standard). We may never know the "official" reason for the reeding, but we do know the "Reeded Edge" variety is a genuine mint product since the reverse die was subsequently used to produce 6 different 1796 Draped Bust varieties (Sheldon numbers 106 through 111). The obverse die, however, was used only in this S-79 die marriage. The Sheldon-79 Reeded Edge die variety has long been considered the most famous variety in the entire series of early US Large Cents, and it is the undisputed "key" to completing a collection of the numbered Sheldon die varieties of 1793-1814 cents. The currently accepted population of this variety includes only 8 examples while 2 more are rumored to exist but remain highly doubtful. And all of those pieces are in relatively low grade with most suffering from significant surface defects. The piece offered here is a new discovery that came to light after our sale of the finest known S-79 cent from the Dan Holmes collection (our auction, 6 Sept 2009, lot 128). The Holmes coin, graded by PCGS as VG10 but considered by us to grade VG8, realized an astonishing $1,265,000.00, a world record for any US large cent. A PCGS graded G4 example of the S-79 variety with less detail than the piece being offered here realized $402,500.00 as lot 1143 in the Bowers & Merena auction of 11/20/2008. Bill Noyes grades this piece net G4+ "average" and his condition census of the 8 known examples is 8-7-5(2)-4+ (this coin)-4-1-X. The VG7 is impounded in the ANS Museum, the Basal State-1 is a heavily corroded example that is barely identifiable without any visible edge reeding, and the "X" is a holed obverse brockage impression. If you are holding out for a choice example, perhaps a lottery ticket would offer better odds for success. The PCGS grading label identifies this piece as the Sheldon-79 Reeded Edge variety. Our grade is net G4+.
